What is microdosing?
Microdosing means taking a very small, "sub-perceptual" amount of a psychedelic — most commonly psilocybin (magic mushrooms) — on a regular schedule. A microdose is a tiny fraction of a full "trip" dose: the idea is that you feel little to no obvious high and go about your normal day. People who microdose usually follow a schedule (a well-known one is one day on, then two days off).
What is psilocybin?
Psilocybin is the naturally occurring psychedelic compound in "magic mushrooms." In the body it converts to psilocin, which acts on serotonin receptors in the brain. At full doses it produces the classic psychedelic experience; microdosing uses only a small fraction of that amount.
Is microdosing legal?
This is the important part, and the short answer is "mostly no — but it's changing." In the United States, psilocybin is a Schedule I controlled substance under federal law, so it's illegal federally. At the state and local level the picture is shifting:
- Colorado (Proposition 122) went the furthest: under state law, adults 21+ may possess, use, grow and share — though not sell — psilocybin and certain other natural psychedelics, and the state is also building a supervised, licensed-facilitator access model.
- Oregon (Measure 109) is narrower: legal access is only through licensed, supervised service centers with a trained facilitator — not retail sale or a general right to buy it for use at home.
- Several cities (Denver, Oakland and others) have decriminalized personal use — which lowers enforcement priority but isn't the same as full legalization.
Laws vary widely and are moving fast. Always check the current rules where you live before doing anything.
What does the research actually say?
You'll see a lot of bold claims about microdosing online. The honest answer is that the science is early and mixed. Many people report benefits like better mood, focus or creativity in surveys — but several rigorous, placebo-controlled studies suggest a good chunk of that may come from expectation (the placebo effect). Researchers are actively studying it, there's no scientific consensus yet, and microdosing is not a proven treatment for any medical condition. Be skeptical of anyone promising guaranteed results.
Safety & responsible use
- Psychedelics can interact with medications (especially antidepressants) and aren't right for everyone — a personal or family history of certain mental-health conditions can raise the risks.
- In an unregulated market, potency and purity vary and can't be verified.
- Don't drive or operate machinery if you feel any effects.
This page is general educational information — not medical or legal advice. Psilocybin is illegal under U.S. federal law and in many places; LURK24 does not sell psilocybin and is not encouraging anyone to break the law. Know your local laws and talk to a qualified professional before making decisions about your health.
